Texas Tribal Buffalo Project Awarded 2025 Newman’s Own Foundation Evidence Grant for Indigenous Food Justice

We are thrilled to announce that the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Newman’s Own Foundation Evidence Grant to support initiatives under the Indigenous Food Justice portfolio. This grant will empower tribal communities across Texas to strengthen food sovereignty, revive traditional buffalo herding practices, and advance culturally-rooted, sustainable food systems.

Supporting Indigenous Food Sovereignty

The Newman’s Own Foundation Evidence Grant recognizes projects that demonstrate measurable impact in food justice, sustainability, and community empowerment. For the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project, this funding will help tribal communities:

  • Reintroduce and care for buffalo herds as a central part of cultural and ecological restoration.

  • Develop community-based food programs that prioritize Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and self-determination.

  • Promote education around traditional food practices, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.

Buffalo have been central to the lifeways, culture, and economy of many Indigenous communities in Texas and the broader Great Plains region. By supporting the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project, the Newman’s Own Foundation is helping restore this vital connection between tribal heritage and sustainable food systems.

Advancing Indigenous-Led Food Initiatives

The Indigenous Food Justice portfolio of Newman’s Own Foundation prioritizes projects that are led by Indigenous communities and focus on systemic change in food systems. With this grant, the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project will be able to:

  • Scale programs that directly benefit tribal members and local communities.

  • Foster resilience in food systems that have been historically disrupted by colonization and environmental degradation.

  • Build networks of knowledge and resources for tribal farmers, ranchers, and community leaders.

A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

This recognition and funding mark a significant milestone for the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project and its commitment to Indigenous food sovereignty. By supporting cultural revitalization through sustainable buffalo restoration and food justice initiatives, this project demonstrates the power of Indigenous-led solutions to address historical inequities and environmental challenges.
