Texas Public Radio: Fronteras: Regenerating the land and indigenous connections through the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project
We are honored to be featured on TPR Fronteras in the episode “Regenerating the Land and Indigenous Connections Through the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project”, airing September 5, 2025.
In this feature, host Norma Martinez explores how our work uses buffalo as agents of ecological restoration, cultural renewal, and community care. Some of the key highlights:
The Texas Tribal Buffalo Project began more than five years ago to reconnect with indigeneity through buffalo and the land.
We manage herds on properties like the original 77-acre site in Waelder, Texas, and in partnership with The Conservation Fund are expanding to nearly 150 acres near Floresville.
Our CEO and founder, Lucille Contreras, shares how buffalo are native stewards of this land: their hooves aerate soil, promote biodiversity, and help restore ecosystems.
Through these efforts, we aim not just to conserve land, but to strengthen Indigenous identity, habitat resilience, and food systems.
