Indigenous Buffalo Restoration and Storytelling with Lucille Contreras

What does the relationship between Indigenous people and the American bison look like today? In this featured talk from the Sid Richardson Museum, our CEO and Founder Lucille Contreras—an enrolled member of the Lipan Apache Band of Texas—shares the story of the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project (TTBP).

Presented as part of the museum’s current exhibit, “Charles M. Russell: Storyteller Across Media,” this conversation explores the cultural and ecological significance of buffalo restoration on ancestral homelands in south central Texas. Lucille speaks about reclaiming Lipan Apache language, traditional foodways, and Indigenous land stewardship through the return of the buffalo.
