Sustainable Food Center: Indigenous food ways are making their way to the cafeteria.

As we transform the food system, there is much to learn from the indigenous people who have had a sustainable, culturally-grounded relationship with the land long before it was called Texas. At the recent Texas Farm to School Learning Collaborative, Sustainable Food Center had the honor of hosting the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project (TTBP) to share insights on how indigenous communities are revitalizing traditional foodways for a sustainable future.

Discover the vision of Iyanee' (bison in Lipan Apache) as a locally-produced, culturally significant protein source. TTBP is not only nourishing health but also reconnecting students with the land through bison's role as a keystone species. Learn from TTBP's Regenerative Ag Specialist, Charles Bush, about an upcoming curriculum that teaches students about bison's habitat-building role and its impact on biodiversity and land regeneration.

The Texas Farm to School Learning Collaborative connects and supports Texas farm to school practitioners implementing programming and buying farm fresh foods. The group hosts events, facilitates network building, and creates resources to build more opportunity for bringing the Texas farms to school.
