Texas Tribal Buffalo Project & Lucille Contreras Featured on PBS’ Women of the Earth

We’re proud that Thirteen’s Women of the Earth—in “How Reviving Buffalo Could Revive a Way of Life” (July 31, 2025)—spotlights Lucille Contreras, founder and CEO of the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project, for leading a bold effort to restore buffalo to their ancestral lands in Texas  .

Under Lucille’s visionary leadership, the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project is a Lipan Apache-led nonprofit focused on Buffalo rematriation, Indigenous-led stewardship, and regenerative land practices across the Southern Plains  .

This episode captures Lucille’s embodiment of Matriarchal Indigenous governance: managing rotational grazing, revitalizing soil and biodiversity, and reviving traditional food systems through programs like Meat for Mama’s and ceremonial harvests. It underscores how Buffalo kinship supports healing from generational trauma, strengthens sovereignty, and rebuilds ancestral connections to land and community
